Youngker High School English III (Junior English) Syllabus Instructor Ms. Beth Hastings 623-474-0100 x 3231 bhastings@buhsd.org Tutoring Times: M-F from 7am until 7:20am and from 2:10pm until 3pm Course Description This course will maintain the college and work preparation of knowledge and skills acquired in sophomore year while extending the experience to include the production of a significant research paper. Literature study will exclusively cover American authors and will explore various works through the literary ages. Course Objectives · Acquire and use new vocabulary · Employ strategies to comprehend text · Identify, analyze, and apply knowledge of the structures and elements of literature · Recognize and apply knowledge of the historical and cultural aspects of literature · Identify, analyze, and apply knowledge of the purpose, structures, and elements of expository text, functional text, and persuasive text · Improve speaking, listening and presenting skills · Compose essays · Complete research projects Materials Required · Black Pens · Pencils · Loose leaf paper (NO SPIRAL BOUND NOTEBOOKS) · Folder for writing assignments · 1 box of tissues per student Behavior Expectations I expect good character and mature behavior. Students are required to come to class prepared to work. This includes having pen, pencil, paper, textbook, completed homework and a serious attitude. Students know about all major assignments in advance, thus absence is no excuse for coming to class unprepared. I expect students to follow all school rules and procedures, to show respect for themselves and to others, and to take responsibility for their own actions. I do not allow food or drink in my classroom. GUM is not allowed anywhere on campus. I strictly enforce the dress code. ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING! There will be zero tolerance for the following: · GUM = Detention after School · Tardiness · Cell phones, electronic devices · Disrespectful behavior toward faculty, staff or classmates · Foul language · Excuses *No one has the right to disrupt or interfere with the learning process. Students should expect to: · Read independently and aloud in class · Write essays and various assignments in class and at home · Have homework and complete it on time · Take quizzes and tests · Work independently and in groups · Speak and present in front of the class · Participate in class · Learn! Grading Procedures Most writing will be graded using the Six Traits Rubric (available on the Arizona Department of Education website). Grades will be based on quizzes, tests, homework, essays, presentations and participation. There will be no opportunity for extra credit. Late work will be accepted at the teacher’s discretion.Students must see the teacher AFTERschool to obtain make up assignments on the day the student returns to school.
